Secret Stage Mixes are go!
We are happy to announce the arrival of three little bundles of download-able musical joy - our very own Secret Stage Mixes. Recorded surreptitiously from the stage last year, these are the first of an ongoing series which have been hand-picked by our panel of experts and thoroughly inspected for sound quality and freshness. Thus far we've uploaded performances from the Rhythm & Roots Festival, The Mystic Theater in Petaluma, CA and the Tractor Tavern in Ballard, WA. Secret Stage Mixes are available only from our recently redesigned merchandise page. Go take a look. Have a listen. Do it!!
Merlefest and the Hillside Album Hour
We are completely thrilled and positively brimming with anticipatory glee to be returning to Merlefest 2009. This festival has been the annual highlight of our touring season since our first appearance there in 2002. We certainly would not be the huge rock stars we are today were it not for the support of Merlefest organizers, staff, and patrons over the past seven years.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of last year's Led Zeppelin II extravaganza, we've been invited to create another hour of hybridized rock 'n' roll mayhem at the final set on Merlefest's Hillside Stage. This year Festival Link is sponsoring a Guess The Album Contest with valuable prizes and gloating rights going to the lucky winner chosen from all correct entries.
We're hitting the road again this week. As part of our continuing efforts to become leaner, meaner and greener, inspired by the transformative eco-teachings of Dr. Herbert Garrison, we have ditched the old gas-guzzling stank-spewing chartreuse microbus. This season of change will see us traveling in style in our new fully electric Segway Sport Utility Vehicles. If you play nice-nice we might take you for a ride.
Mark your calendars. Call your friends. Let 'em know we're on our way. Here's where we're headed:
FRI. April 17 8:00 pm SKIPPER'S SMOKEHOUSE Tampa, FL We love this joint. Great food, great vibe. One of the few places we've ever been where the phrase "smoked mullet" can be uttered without a shred of irony. The Wildlife Refugees open at 8. Waybacks play at 9:30
SAT. April 18 3:00 pm STRINGBREAK Brooksville, FL Our old pal and swamp tour guide extraordinaire Mitch Lind throws one hell of a party at the magical mystical and beautifully rustic Sertoma Ranch in Florida's hill country. Two sets at 3:00 and 9:00 pm. Joe leads the traditional Vision Quest outing at 4:00 am Sunday.
SUN. April 19 4:00 pm BAY JAM 15 Islamorada, FL Our first Florida Keys appearance ever! 12 bands. Music starts at noon.
TUE. April 21 10:30 pm SUN DOG DINER Neptune Beach, FL We'll be going streaking on a nearby golf course afterwards. You're invited.
FRI. April 24 9:15 pm MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC We landed the closing slot on the Watson Stage Friday night! We'll be joined by a few very special guests. And earlier in the day: Warren and James songwriting workshop at 10:45 am, and James guitar workshop at 6 pm, both in the Pit.
SAT. April 25 11:45 am MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC Indoors at the Walker Center. Warren co-leads fiddle workshop in the Pit at 9:30 am.
SAT. April 25 5:00 pm MERLEFEST Wilkesboro, NC SHHHHHHH!!! It's a surprise. Waybacks plus extremely special guests for another Hillside Album Hour!! Which classic album do YOU think we'll play?
We hear tell that it's once again safe to travel to Texas, so we're gonna do just that:
WED. May 13 8:00 pm ALLGOOD CAFE Dallas, TX This hip hangout is the heart and soul of Deep Ellum. We have a collective man-crush on the most congenial host and proprietor Mike Snider. The staff is pretty crush-worthy, too.
THU. May 14 7:30 pm McGONIGEL'S MUCKY DUCK Houston, TX We had a great time here last fall and we're glad to be going back. Come see Warren play the "frugal sophisticate" as he attempts to lock himself in the wine room again.
FRI. May 15 10:00 pm THREADGILL'S SOUTH STORE Austin, TX This legendary Austin joint "celebrates the history of the Armadillo and its salad days of the 1970ís." I hear the preserved armadillo salad is to die for (or from). James Hyland opens at 9. Waybacks at 10.
SAT. May 16 8:00 pm PIONEER MUSEUM Fredericksburg, TX 2009 Roots Music Series featuring the Onion Creek Crawdaddies at 6, the Lost Pines at 7, and them dang ole Waybacks at 8.
And, later next month:

We hope to see you soon! Stay safe, be easy, and remember: never get out of the boat.
Yours in humble servitude,
Joe Kyle Jr. and the Waybacks
