2009 may not be the year we recovered from the asset-backed securities recession, the year we rescued unemployment from double-digit purgatory, or the year we drafted meaningful bipartisan reform of the US heath care system. But is there any good news for 2009 ? Hell, yes! If nothing else, 2009 is the year when the reunion tour reigned supreme!
And The Waybacks are nothing if not eager to jump slightly-belatedly onto that massive industry juggernaut...
So, we're formally announcing today that our show at the new Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA, this Friday night, October 30, 2009... WILL BE THE BAND'S FAREWELL PERFORMANCE!
And what a venue in which to hold this historic show! The Freight and Salvage has been a Bay Area institution since the late 1960s, and it has just moved to a spacious new location in downtown Berkeley. The Waybacks have so many wonderful memories from the original Freight, and this will be our first (and of course, last) chance to perform in the hallowed new space that has already been christened by the likes of the David Grisman Quintet.
Friday, October 30, 7pm doors, 8pm showtime
The Waybacks -- FINAL SHOW
Freight and Salvage
2020 Addison Street
OK, I recognize that regardless of what any unnamed hero bands of ours who may have named themselves after certain avian creatures may or may not have done in the past, it is TOTALLY NOT COOL to announce a band is having their final show only to attempt to cash in on subsequent reunion shows. For shame!
And I recognize that our performances on 11/1 in Arcata, CA, on 11/2 in Ashland, OR, and on 11/3 in Crescent City, CA, may muddy the waters somewhat.
And there's also our exciting announcement that we have been confirmed for next April at MerleFest 2010 with a Watson Stage performance on Friday. And on Saturday--back by popular demand--we'll be presenting the 3rd Annual Hillside Album Hour with some very special guests!
Nevertheless, there still is some truth to the exaggerated reports of our demise that may or may not have originated with this email. Fact is, after many consecutive years of hard touring, we Waybacks have decided that 2010 should be a mellow road year for us. We're planning to tour much less than we have in recent seasons, and we'll be focusing our efforts on some individual extracurricular musical endeavors… stay tuned for exciting news on that front…
Thus, while the truth is that our show at The Freight will not be our final show, it WILL be our final hometown Bay Area show for 2009. And we're going to hold only a select number of performances in 2010, so please don't take it personally if The Waybacks don't make it to your hometown over the next year. We love your hometown! And we love your local music venue (unless your local music venue happens to be that unnamed bar in Bristol, TN, that wrote us that bad check back in 2005… who, us, hold a grudge ?) Everywhere else, we love you and can't wait to get back… but 2010 may have to be a year off…
So if you've been itching for some Waybacks, or just think you might start itching for some Waybacks sometime over the next year, avoid the painful withdrawal and bet on a sure thing: This Friday night, The Freight and Salvage, Berkeley, CA. It's going to be an amazing night, in a spectacular new venue with vibe literally crawling out of the walls! And if you've been thinking about making a road trip or an air trip to see us play, you won't find a better opportunity.
Not to mention that the San Francisco Bay is positively BEAUTIFUL in October...
All the best to you, our friends and fans! We can't thank you enough for the support you've shown us over the years, and if you can't make it to Berkeley this weekend, we'll miss ya, and we'll hope to see you soon!
